Hi, I'm Maya Strauss, and I am a lighting designer and storyteller from Baltimore, Maryland. Primarily working in theater, I also have intensive experience in dance, concerts, live events, film, and industrial lighting.
First training as a stage manager (I love my paperwork!), I was fascinated by the transformative power of lighting design- the slight shifts to highlight emotional nuances or the sudden bold looks creating a completely different experience of the space.
While I specialize in lighting design, I also practice dramaturgy, where I focus on collaborating with directors, actors, and the design team to preserve the world building and storytelling of the piece. To me, this is the most important thing about art- developing meaningful stories with a group of creative minds. This training across disciplines gives me a unique perspective, enhancing communication, collaboration, and community impact.
In addition to lighting, I also practice projection design, dramaturgy, and photography.
After graduating from Rutgers University in May, Maya will be based in NYC and D.C.
She is accepting work in all areas at mayastrausslighting@gmail.com
